So now its been 10 weeks of exercise both walking and weights and I feel great. I knew I needed to begin a fitness program, but I wasn’t sure what type of program to begin. I wanted to run, but was told at my weight I would just hurt myself and that it was best to start out slow by walking.
I live near a park and every night I would see people walking, either talking with other people or listening to their headphones on a mission of staying fit. I thought how great for them.
I began with a short distance at first, and now that I am walking almost 45 minutes a night, I was able to determine that I am actually walking 2 miles. Now this is huge since I am now hitting over 10,000 steps a day when in the beginning I was averaging 1500 steps. You see I sit at a desk all day and can’t do my work walking around. All of my work is on a computer so my steps are limited.
I purchased a Fitbit a year ago when my doctor asked me how active I was. I told her I was moderately active. I was shocked to find out I wasn’t even walking 2000 steps a day. I definitely was not active at all.
After a week of walking, my neighbor asked if she could walk with me. It has been fantastic because while we do talk, we keep up a good steady pace and when one of us doesn’t feel like walking, the other motivates so we keep each other moving every night. It feels good to be a part of a team sharing the same goals. But if you are alone, don’t let that deter you.
Walking was the best way for me to begin a routine. I was able to add weights a couple times a week after I built up some stamina with walking.
As always never begin a routine without consulting your doctor first.
